Bone Health Through Life and ONERO

Our Bones are active living tissues with a complex metabolism. Our bones grow and calcify rapidly over the growth phase in our life, until cartilage ‘ growth plates’ (epiphyseal plates) close over when we stop growing UP in height. 80-90% Bone Density occurs before the age of 19/20 years.5-10%  more bone density Increase, may occur between 25-30 years. Peak Bone Density is set by 35 years. Our body maintains this level of bone density during mid life if the body conditions are right.

Then for woman, as menopause occurs, the decreased levels of oestrogen are part of the normal Bone loss. It is normal to lose of 5% BMD during first past of menopause. Men can also lose bone density, but usually not at the same rate as woman.

Image shows bones mass in men and women as it changes with age. Bone mass falls from around the age of 35.

There is a constant balance of Bone formation and bone re absorption. Our skeletal system is slowly replaced in a cyclical pattern over every 7-10 years.  Living osteocyte (bone) cells form a complicated matrix with mineral collagen (protein) fibres and blood vessels. Osteoblasts are bone forming cells. OsteoClasts are bone resorption cells.

This process is influenced by many factors.

Many body systems influence the rate of bone formation and loss.

These include:

  • Genetic, Nutrition, Gastrointestinal, Circulation, Hormonal
  • Physical: Bone Responds to the Stress we put onto it

BONES RESPOND TO STRESS ON THEM

Astronauts in space lose bone density. Tennis players have greater bone density in the bones of their dominant arm. Post menopausal woman who only do water aerobics have reduced bone density compared to aged matched exercisers.

Gradual Exercise and mechanical stress on bones increases bone density.

Piezoelectric Effect in bone stimulate osteoblast activity. Load is needed to stimulate a change.

Exercise also increases the hormone calcitonin production by the thyroid gland. Calcitonin inhibits osteoclast Activity, inhibiting resorption

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is progressively low bone density, and it is often called the ‘silent’ disease, because people don’t know it’s happening until they suffer a fracture.

Worldwide, one in three women and one in five men aged 50 years and over will suffer an osteoporotic fracture. Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and fragile, so that they are more susceptible to breaking or compressing easily – even as a result of a minor fall, a bump, a sneeze, or a sudden movement. PREVENTION OF FRACTURES or LOSS of BONE HEIGHT is BETTER!

ONERO

The Onero programmer developed by the Bone Clinic, is based on the groundbreaking research of Belinda Beck from Griffith Uni, QLD.

Onero uses exercise to manage osteoporosis and osteopenia.

It does this by aiming to stimulate an increase a person’s bone density by:

  • carefully graded weightlifting exercises
  • Impact exercises
  • Balance and strength challenges aiming to prevent falls
  • Supervision by physiotherapists and exercise physiologists who understand each individual’s health conditions

Susie Bond at Activate physiotherapy. Exercise rehab is delighted to be able to become a licensed provider of the Onero programme.

Susie has long been an advocate of exercise for many conditions. She has a special interest in bone health. She is looking forward to join with you to:

  • improve your bone density DEXA scan results,
  • Prevent insidious vertebral wedge fractures that cause loss of spinal height and stooped posture
  • build muscle
  • Reduce risk of falls
  • remain fit and ready for your daily activities and adventures

Onero is not an alternative to medicines for osteoporosis but can positively augment the effects of medication from your GP or endocrinologist.

Diet including calcium, protein and vitamin D is also an important element in maintaining healthy strong bones and muscles. Nutritional advice is often recommended to augment your bone health journey.

Onero = means ‘Overload’

Safety is important when exercising to create an ‘overload’ effect to produce increases in bone density.

We aim to help you exercise without injury, with awareness of each person’s ‘co morbidities’. That is to manage other things like knee Osteoarthritis and medical conditions that may affect your ability to lift the weights that the Onero programme requires.

We look forward to sharing this Journey with you to improve your bone health!
