Concerned about bone health and Osteoporosis?

Wondering which exercise is truly effective?

Bone health is a hot topic, and you hear about all sorts of recommended exercises, and conflicting information. It’s hard to know what’s safe or effective. General exercise isn’t enough. Research shows that to improve bone health, you need a very specific type of exercise. That’s where Onero comes in.

What is Onero?

Onero™ is a supervised, bone-targeted program developed by The Bone Clinic. It uses high-intensity resistance and impact training, scientifically proven to improve bone, muscle, and physical function for people with low to very low bone mass. It’s not just exercise; it’s a precise medical intervention designed to make your bones stronger.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Onero Questions Answered

A: While you don’t need a formal referral to book an assessment with us, we recommend you consult with your GP or specialist to discuss all your treatment options for osteoporosis. We are happy to work alongside your medical team.

A: Yes. Safety is our top priority. The Onero program was designed specifically for people with low to very low bone mass. The high-intensity exercises have been shown not to cause vertebral fractures in clinical trials when supervised correctly. Every session is fully supervised by a physiotherapist to ensure your technique is perfect and the load is appropriate for you.

A: Absolutely. This is a key reason why supervision by a physiotherapist is so important. During your initial assessment, we will evaluate all co-existing conditions. We are experts at modifying exercises to work around other issues, ensuring you can still get the bone-building benefits without aggravating other conditions.

A: While you will start feeling stronger and more confident within weeks, changes in bone density take time. A testimonial on the Onero brochure noted a 5% improvement in the spine and 8% in the hip after 12 months. Consistency is key. We recommend tracking progress with follow-up DEXA scans as advised by your GP.

A: Onero is a clinical intervention, not a general gym class. Every component is based on scientific evidence to stimulate bone growth. The small group size and expert physiotherapy supervision ensure you are performing the exercises correctly and at the right intensity to be effective, which is difficult to achieve in a standard gym setting.

A: 45 minutes.

A: Two classes per week are recommended to see effective changes in bone health and strength.

A: Onero classes are not designed to replace your existing exercise routine necessarily. For example you will still need to do your normal Pilates and stretch classes and cardio endurance exercise for a well rounded balanced fitness regime.

A: No! We do aim to work hard in class, but this is for functional strength for daily life. You will be eventually lifting heavier weights than you may have been used to in the past, but you will hardly notice the increases with our slow, careful process to ‘overload’ the bones to stimulate bone density increases.
